Alien Isolation Review and Tips

I recently picked up this game and completed it over a week ago on Xbox 360. I didn’t expect to like the game as much as I did. I have heard bad things about movie adapted games but this was just as good as the movie. You start out the game as Ripley’s daughter, Amanda and take on a voyage 15 years after her mother’s disappearance. Amanda is headed to Sevastopol Space Station to recover a flight recorder found from her mother’s ill fated ship. As you attempt to dock there seems to be chaos at the station so you and two others have to space walk to manually enter. Then there’s an explosion and you have to struggle to get on board. Once in the airlock, the horrifying journey ensues on the station. You start exploring, understanding game mechanics but note that you will find torches later to open locked doors. Then you run into a man that seems paranoid and he reveals that visitors at this decaying station that became stuck there have turned into bands of hostile scavengers. As both you and this man circumnavigate the first group, he gets snatched by the alien. From this point on you have to look over your shoulder at all times.

However, this was not your basic first person shooter; it was a survival game. You scavenge and create objects such as bombs and flashbangs and you can find guns but ammo is very limited. The alien is a formidable enemy; he has a heightened sense of hearing so if you use any of this he will appear. Throughout the game, you are provided hiding spots which are necessary to survive since you cannot fight the alien. You can hide in lockers, containers and under desks but even that isn’t safe forever. Other than that you can hear the alien running in the vents and has distinct sounds and footsteps so if you hear this you better hide. You do begin to realize that the alien takes a certain route so plan accordingly. Maybe watch him make a lap before moving forward. However, never run it will be a quick kill for the alien. Also sometimes you might see drool coming down from the vents avoid it at all costs unless you want a heart attack. I seriously screamed the first time that happened. When surviving against the alien, patience is key. You eventually acquire the motion sensor which makes it easier to spot the alien and you get a flamethrower much later which is useful in forcing the alien to back off.

Another problem that will occur is when you encounter the synthetics. For some reason they have gone berserk and kill on sight. You can’t hide from them so you only have a few options. One option is to kill it. Guns are not very effective so use either a pipe bomb or EMP mine. If you use the mine follow up with a melee attack to finish it off. Another option is run past them because they will not keep up. Be warned doing either will possibly summon the alien so do it at your own risk. It is rare you handle both at the same time though. Later in the game you do trap the alien and kick it off the station but things do get worse, much worse. I don’t want to reveal anymore plot, just do not get too comfortable for there may or may not be more than one alien. (Muw ha ha ha ha, enjoy the rest of the game!)

Overall I give this game 8.5/10. It only loses points because the gameplay mechanics were weird. It uses a weapon wheel and it was often too slow to switch to what you want. I died many times because of that. Also it was confusing figuring out how to create items at first and in my case I couldn’t get my flashlight to work. I definitely, however, enjoyed the level of fear in this game; this was a horror game at its best.
