The Mystery of The Trump Campaign

If you have been following the news over the last two months, you have noticed that Donald Trump continues to rise in the Republican polls despite multiple controversies. I have been scratching my head since it was revealed that he was leading the polls with 24%. That is fairly high considering all the diverse Republican candidates, but I still do not understand why Trump is so special. The controversies that he has caused seem like campaign destroyers but he keeps going undeterred. The worst thing that he said was when he mentioned Mexicans are bringing crime, and they’re rapists and murderers. That should have destroyed him and these comments cost him his show Celebrity Apprentice and other sponsorships. Then he disrespected McCain noting he’s not a hero veteran because he was captured in war. His demeanor is very rude and insulting and we see that he makes nasty comments to reporters and particularly women. These behaviors are very irrational and not the type of qualities that are to be desired for a President.

I researched about why Americans are supporting Trump and what makes him so special. It seems to begin with Americans’ distrust over the deadlock in the political landscape and the weak platforms of other candidates. At a meeting of Trump supporters  according to Time Magazine supporters summed up their viewpoints by stating , “When Trump talks, it may not be presented in a pristine, PC way, but we’ve been having that crap pushed to us for the past 40 years!” said another man. “He’s saying what needs to be said.” This is interesting because it seems that Trump is more willing to say what is on the minds of many Americans even if it’s offensive. Also these supporters seem disgusted by the status quo of the political landscape. I guess they want a no B.S President. They admire that negative press does not seem to phase him. Many seem to also like his policies especially because he wants to build a wall at the border and deport immigrants and strengthen the military. Conservatives typically favor these types of policies.

It is funny that the one thing that these people want, which is accountability in politics, is not something that Trump is advocating about. He actually would be worse for accountability since he is uncompromising and not open to criticism. He wants it to be his way or the highway which would foment conflict something that we need less of in politics. According to Frank Luntz, a Republican pollster, put this all in perspective by stating, ““I want to put the Republican leadership behind this mirror and let them see. They need to wake up. They don’t realize how the grassroots have abandoned them,” Luntz continued. “Donald Trump is punishment to a Republican elite that wasn’t listening to their grassroots.” The ineptitude of the Republican candidates seem to have unleashed the Trump “Monster” so to speak. Americans are gravitating to him just because he’s telling them what they want to hear which is more or less the same in politics. The Republicans need a new angle for reaching out to everyday Americans, in order to receive a stronger outpouring of support. With all this being said this election cycle seems to be owned by the Democrats. Hilary Clinton and Bernie Sanders seem like very strong candidates this year.
