The ridiculous Trump administration strikes again by withdrawing from the Paris climate agreement. This is an important agreement that plans to reduce carbon emissions globally. For it to work, there needs to be total cooperation among all countries to work at these reductions. The United States is now one of three nations refusing to join. That is a huge mistake especially for the environment since the US is the second highest offender of carbon emissions.
Even though the US is withdrawing, they will technically still be part of the agreement until 2020. The pact was agreed to by most nations in 2015. According to NPR, “Representatives from 196 nations made a historic pact on Dec. 12, 2015, in Paris to adopt green energy sources, cut down on climate change emissions and limit the rise of global temperatures — while also cooperating to cope with the impact of unavoidable climate change.” The main goal is to prevent a 2 degree Celsius increase globally. Nations can certainly find cleaner energy sources and technologies to reduce emissions. One stipulation requires a commitment by developed nations to provide $100 billion in environmental aid to the developing nations. If a developing nation such as India can utilize clean energy efficiently they will not need fossil fuels as much to become fully industrialized and modernized.
Cooperation is the key to this deal and when an important superpower such as the US backs out, others may start doubting even being involved either. Trump believes it is simply a bad deal but he is not seeing the big picture. He’s complaining about the costs of the deal but parts of it are nonbinding. As stated by the Washington Post, “It is not a treaty. Country commitments are entirely voluntary, based on national circumstances. Each country decides on its own what it intends to do. “The US agreed to provide $3 billion in environmental aid. So we technically can choose what we want to provide and the percentage of emissions we can reduce. Trump simply does not believe global warming is real and that in itself is a real danger to our environment and society. Even though temperatures may be rising by only 1 degree, the ice caps are melting, sea levels are rising and weather events are becoming harsher. If we deny climate change, we deny the future. Hopefully at least cities and companies can still try to adhere to the agreement regardless of our government’s silly decision.
